Antique Spanish carpet, circa 1920
The production of carpets in Europe first began in Spain under Moorish rule in the fourteenth century, and it has continued unbroken up to the present.
This elegant antique Spanish carpet is the proud heir of a long tradition or rug weaving in the Cuenca Spain Its circular medallion format goes back to Islamic Spain. Yet it is rendered with a rich wreath-like floral detail and soft, golden coloration that are distinctly Spanish or European. Subtle touches of salmon and olive ad a hint of excitement amidst the classic restraint.
The interlacing Kufic border is strikingly authentic and beautiful. But the soft saffron and salmon coloration makes the carpet well suited to contemporary decor.
