Antique Kurd Bidjar from Persia, late nineteenth century
The lavish repeat pattern of palmettos and arabesques on the field of this magnificent antique Kurd Bidjar is from classical Persian and Caucasian carpets. Here it is animated further by the village drawing style of the Kurdish weavers, and by the use of a dramatic navy ground as a foil for the rich palette of red, blues, yellows and greens. A monumental crib palmetto vine scroll border on a rich red ground frames the navy field with a rich, contrasting effect.
